I was responsible for the redevelopment and ongoing management of the Adelson Galleries website during the gallery’s reopening at its Crown Building location in New York. The gallery presented historically significant legacy artists alongside contemporary work. I designed, developed, updated, and maintained the website throughout its operation at that location.
The site was derived from the system I had previously developed for Adelson Galleries Boston. The underlying architecture was adapted and extended to meet the needs of the New York gallery, allowing for efficient management of artists, exhibitions, and artworks while maintaining consistency across the gallery’s presentation.
I was also responsible for much of the gallery’s visual design work. Because I was directly involved in producing promotional materials and exhibition graphics, I remained integrated into the website’s content pipeline. For that reason, the site did not require a traditional CMS or complex database structure. Content flowed directly from the gallery’s curatorial and design process into the web system.

The gallery presented historically significant work alongside contemporary pieces, requiring an interface that remained neutral across a wide range of styles and periods. A clean, minimal structure was chosen to keep the artwork at the center of every page.

The site was structured around a data-driven system, which was essential for presenting the substantial body of artists, exhibitions, and individual works represented by the gallery. Careful attention was given to a consistent display that would suit the wide range of artwork shown by the gallery. Slight adjustments to style were possible at the exhibition level including a subtle color theming.

The site included configurable areas for current exhibitions, featured events, and gallery announcements. These sections were structured and data-driven, but they also allowed for fully custom HTML layouts when an exhibition required a distinct presentation.
Digital Exhibitions
Over time, I developed several approaches to digital exhibition formats. These included online catalogue viewing, virtual walkthrough concepts, and discrete 360° exhibition navigation designed to approximate the experience of standing within the gallery.
Navigation
Primary site categories were presented through structured header and footer navigation. On mobile displays, navigation collapsed into a toggleable side panel designed to preserve clarity and direct access to artists and exhibitions.

A fully responsive layout was implemented so that the artwork could be presented beautifully and without compromise across devices.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Structured metadata, including Schema.org markup, was implemented across relevant page types such as artist, artwork, and exhibition entries. Semantic HTML, descriptive metadata, and logical pagination were used to support search indexing and discoverability. The site architecture supported both human navigation and search engine crawlability.
Accessibility
The site was developed with attention to accessibility standards. Clear semantic structure, descriptive image metadata, and consistent navigation patterns were prioritized to ensure ease of use across devices and assistive technologies.
Technical Approach
The site was built using PHP with server-rendered HTML, which aligned with the operational needs and infrastructure of the gallery at the time.
Artwork Attribution
The artworks shown on the website were exhibited by the gallery and remain the property of their respective artists and rights holders.
