I designed the exhibition catalogue for Alien Nations 2020, curated by Bartholomew F. Bland and Yuneikys Villalonga and presented at the Coral Gables Museum. The exhibition revisited themes of alienation, identity, and psychological distance first explored in a 2017 presentation at the Lehman College Art Gallery, this time reframed within the intensified social, political, and technological climate of 2020.

To maintain continuity with the earlier volume, I carried forward key elements of the existing visual language, including the vertical titling approach and selected motifs, adapting them to a new body of work that included bold installations, film stills, and richly detailed pieces. Given the strength and visual density of the artworks, the overall layout was kept deliberately restrained, allowing the images to anchor the reading experience.

As with other catalogues in the Lehman College Art Gallery’s themed series, thematic resonance was brought into the design through extracted visual motifs drawn directly from the artworks. These elements appeared as floating accents on hero spreads, sometimes set against dark grey fields to evoke a sense of void, dislocation, or surreal drift aligned with the exhibition’s conceptual focus.

Editorial Director Linda Locke was closely involved during the design phase, offering insights that helped refine and elevate the final publication. The resulting catalogue balances continuity and responsiveness, reflecting both the evolution of the exhibition and the cultural moment in which it was produced.
