This catalogue was created to accompany Federico Uribe: Drawn in Pencils, an exhibition presenting works constructed from hundreds of precisely cut colored pencils arranged into intricate compositions. The design emphasized clarity and restraint, using isolated imagery and controlled typography to allow the physical texture, rhythm, and material presence of the artwork to remain central throughout the publication.

The role also included extending the exhibition’s visual language across related digital and promotional materials while overseeing specialized print treatments used to reinforce the tactile qualities of the work.

Article

I designed the exhibition catalogue for Federico Uribe: Drawn in Pencils, produced for Adelson Galleries to accompany the exhibition of Uribe’s work. Because the pieces are constructed from hundreds of precisely cut colored pencils and function simultaneously as image and object, the design approach centered on presenting their tactile and sculptural qualities as clearly as possible.

Many works were prepared as isolated cutouts, allowing the forms to float cleanly on the page without background. Given the jagged, irregular edges of the medium, this image preparation was a careful and technically demanding process. The resulting presentation emphasized the rhythm, color, and surface of the constructions while keeping the surrounding layout quiet and controlled.

Typography was kept minimal but assertive enough to complement the visual energy of the work without competing with it. The publication also incorporated specialized production effects, including a subtle gloss glaze applied to all images.

The cover featured a custom emboss created from a hand-built height map of Hare, designed to evoke the physical texture and dimensionality of Uribe’s pencil constructions. Together, these choices reinforced the material presence of the artwork while maintaining a restrained and cohesive catalogue design.
