I designed the exhibition catalogue for Oh, Panama! Jonas Lie Paints the Panama Canal, organized by the Hudson River Museum and the James A. Michener Art Museum to commemorate the centennial of the Panama Canal. The publication brought together substantial historical material alongside Lie’s vivid paintings, requiring a design approach that balanced scholarly clarity with strong visual presentation.

To support the range of content, I developed a flexible design system capable of accommodating essays, archival context, and special feature spreads, including postcard layouts and historical information pages. At the same time, the plate section was kept minimal and spacious, allowing the artwork to stand on its own without unnecessary distraction.

A consistent typographic framework unified the catalogue, providing continuity across varied content while allowing for selective expressive moments where the historical narrative benefited from additional emphasis. These subtle interventions helped guide readers through complex material without disrupting overall clarity.

Director of Publications Linda Locke was closely involved during the design phase, offering insights that helped refine and elevate the final publication. The resulting catalogue supports both the historical significance of the subject and the visual strength of Lie’s work, presenting them in a balanced and cohesive form.
