This catalogue was created to accompany the Picasso / Vollard exhibition, exploring the formative relationship between Pablo Picasso and his early dealer Ambroise Vollard and its impact on Picasso’s printmaking. The design emphasized clarity and balance, presenting historically significant works from the Suite des Saltimbanques and the Suite Vollard in a format that allowed the imagery and contextual information to be read together without distraction.

Contributing Roles

Alex Stevovich was responsible for the visual identity and design of the exhibition catalogue, including concept development, layout, typography, image preparation, and coordination through production. The role also included extending the publication’s visual language into a digital companion while maintaining clarity, historical sensitivity, and consistency across print and digital formats.

I designed the exhibition catalogue for the Picasso / Vollard exhibition, which explored the formative relationship between Pablo Picasso and art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Vollard played a crucial role in Picasso’s early career, giving him his first solo exhibition in 1901 and supporting his early printmaking efforts, including the publication of the Suite des Saltimbanques in 1913.

The catalogue presents key works from the Suite des Saltimbanques alongside rare prints such as Le Saltimbanque au Repos, L’Aigle, and Le Poussin. It also includes thirty-six plates from the Suite Vollard, a monumental series produced between 1930 and 1937 that explores themes of love, artistic identity, and mythological figures such as the minotaur. Contextual material detailing the production of the suite and its later completion by Henri M. Petiet is integrated throughout the publication.

Produced in collaboration with Adelson Galleries for Marc Rosen Fine Art, the catalogue was designed in a square format to provide generous space for the imagery. Minimalist typography, detailed captions, and a restrained layout were used to emphasize clarity and elegance while supporting historical context and external references.

In addition to the print publication, a digital companion was developed with a slightly reimagined design suited to contemporary viewing. Together, the print and digital formats present a cohesive catalogue that supports close looking while respecting the historical significance of the material.
