I designed the museum catalogue for Staten Island SEEN, produced for the Staten Island Museum as a publication combining scholarly essays with a substantial plates section. Featuring landscapes and cityscapes spanning several centuries, the design needed to remain calm and open, allowing the artwork’s rich color and atmosphere to take precedence throughout the book.

Given the abundance of horizontal works, I adopted wide, spacious layouts with minimal captioning and generous breathing room. This approach allowed the paintings to be experienced at scale without visual interruption, while maintaining a consistent rhythm across spreads.

Each essay section opened with a full-width landscape and a bold drop cap, creating a strong visual entry point into the historical narrative. The plates section followed a restrained fine-arts structure, with clean spreads, consistent pacing, and typography chosen to support extended reading without distraction.

Copy Editor Linda Locke was closely involved during the design phase, offering insights that helped refine the final publication. The resulting catalogue balances scholarly clarity with visual presence, supporting both the historical scope of the exhibition and the museum’s standards for presentation.
