I designed the exhibition catalogue for The Eyes Have It, a themed group exhibition at the Lehman College Art Gallery curated by Bartholomew F. Bland with co-curator Laura J. A. De Riggi. As part of an ongoing collaboration with the gallery’s group exhibitions, these catalogues were intentionally approached with greater visual expressiveness than traditional fine-art publications.

For this volume, the visual language was drawn directly from the exhibition’s focus on sight and perception. I used deep blacks reminiscent of the pupil, crisp white space, and subtle typographic inflections to evoke the idea of the eye as a “window to the soul.” Cropped details and close-up fragments appeared throughout the layouts, reinforcing themes of focus, scrutiny, and the act of seeing.

A flexible layout system supported the wide range of media and artist essays included in the exhibition, allowing conceptual boldness to come through while keeping the presentation clear and readable. The design balanced visual experimentation with structural consistency, ensuring that no single work overwhelmed the larger narrative of the exhibition.

Publication Director Linda Locke was closely involved during the design phase, offering insights that helped refine the final publication. The resulting catalogue reflects both the conceptual ambitions of the exhibition and the gallery’s commitment to thoughtful, contemporary presentation.
