I designed and developed the website for Willard Traub, an architectural and fine arts photographer, launched in 2011. The site was conceived as a permanent and curated web showcase of his photographic work, organized across nine thematic series containing close to 200 photographs. Rather than an expanding archive, the site reflected Willard's specific vision for how his work should be represented online: a deliberate, fixed curation, presented with care.

Scope of Work

  • Website architecture and design.
  • Visual identity and header design.
  • Front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Server-side development (PHP).
  • Custom client-side JavaScript for series and image navigation.
  • Internal database design for series and artwork types.
  • E-commerce storefront development including pricing display and shopping cart integration.
  • Video section development.
  • Responsive layout implementation.
  • Search engine optimization including structured metadata and semantic markup.
  • Server setup and configuration.
  • Ongoing site maintenance and technical oversight.

Identity

The visual identity for the site was developed through this project, establishing how Willard Traub's photographic work would be represented online. Custom branding was developed around the header treatment and titling, giving the site a considered typographic presence suited to the character of his work. The overall theme and visual language were designed to serve the photography without imposing on it.

Design Approach

The site was designed with minimal, breathable space around the photographs, allowing the work to present itself without competition from decorative elements or dense captioning. Navigation and site ornamentation were kept restrained throughout. The photographs lead entirely.

Features

Photographic Series

The site organized Willard Traub's photography across nine thematic series, with each series presented as a coherent body of work. Custom client-side JavaScript powered the navigation of series and individual photographs, providing pleasant and interactive transitions suited to the presentation of fine photography.

Internal Database

Series data and individual artwork records were managed through an internal database, with client-side JavaScript loading series and image content dynamically. This allowed the curated structure of the site to be maintained cleanly without requiring page reloads for navigation within series.

Store and E-Commerce

The site included a storefront component presenting Willard Traub's photography as purchasable prints, with individual works displayed alongside pricing and linked to an e-commerce shopping cart for purchase. This allowed the site to function as both a presentation of his work and a direct point of sale.

Video

A video section was added to the site following the initial launch, incorporating footage of Willard Traub's work and process. This extended the site's presentation beyond still photography and provided additional context for his practice.

Responsive

A fully responsive layout was implemented to ensure consistent presentation of the photography across screen sizes and devices.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Search engine optimization was addressed through clear semantic page structure, Schema.org structured data, and descriptive metadata across series and individual photograph pages, supporting discoverability of the work and the photographer.

Accessibility

The site was developed with attention to accessibility standards. Clear semantic structure and consistent navigation patterns were prioritized throughout.

Artwork Attributions

All photography displayed on the website is the work of Willard Traub and remains copyright of his estate. Reproduction rights are reserved.

History

The site operated as Willard Traub's primary web presence following its launch in 2011. Following the conclusion of the original engagement, I later developed an independent archival site in his memory (2025), drawing on the more sophisticated display systems developed through my ongoing work in artist catalogue raisonné platforms. This is presented as a separate website as it is a completely new site and not affiliated directly with the artist or the estate.
