Snapshoto for Maya

Snapshoto for Maya is a native Maya implementation of the Snapshoto workflow for maintaining historical versions without changing the identity of the active scene file.

Rather than advancing a scene through incrementally numbered filenames, the working Maya file retains a canonical name and location. Historical states are instead preserved externally as timestamped, compressed snapshots. This keeps paths stable for referenced assets, automation, scripts, and other systems that depend on the predictable identity of a scene file.

Snapshoto for Maya integrates this workflow directly into Maya through its File menu, allowing a snapshot of the current scene to be created without leaving the application. The same functionality is exposed programmatically through its Python API, allowing snapshot creation to participate in scripts, custom tools, and larger production workflows.

The extension is a standalone implementation written in Python for Maya rather than an interface to the desktop Snapshoto executable. It follows the same underlying snapshot strategy while being designed specifically around Maya's application environment and scene workflow.

Like Snapshoto itself, the extension remains deliberately focused on snapshot creation rather than archive management. Snapshots provide historical states of the canonical working file, while retention, pruning, replication, and long-term backup remain independent concerns that can be handled according to the needs of the surrounding production environment.

Together with the general-purpose Snapshoto application and other application-specific implementations, Snapshoto for Maya provides a native way for Maya projects to participate in the same canonical-file workflow.
